CIRCUS
This is cinematographic circus!
People say: “The circus is an art that’s trying to find itself”. Ivan replies: “yes, it’s true, the circus is an art that involves research”. Ivan is Ivan Mosjoukine, four young circus performers who have taken a great figure of Russian cinema as their muse. Sensations and strange trajectories blend intense bodies, images and cut-up. This circus reinvents its basic grammar using emotions, intelligence, humor, virtuosity and commitment. Ivan Mosjoukine is trying to invent a poetics of the circus. Their first performance is eagerly awaited.
VOWS SIGNED BY THE 4 AUTHORS OF IVAN MOSJOUKINE
“I freely choose to obey the following 15 principles:
1_ Technical transformations must be made in plain view
on the stage. No using the wings.
2_ No music may be used unless it is physically and materially made
by a recognizable source. Any medium is then authorized.
3_ The spectator must be able to change viewpoints without changing seats: it must be possible to recreate each scene at least four times from different angles.
4_ The space where the action is centred will be 10*10 meters. Any other space situated beyond these limits shall therefore be considered literally “eccentric.”
5_ The circus must be very colourful.
6_ Experimentation shall always be favoured over demonstration.
By this, we accept to know nothing and increase the questions.
6 bis_ People say: “The circus is an art that’s trying to find itself.” Ivan replies: “yes, it’s true, the circus is an art that involves research”.
7_ All magic shall be forbidden: the principle shall therefore be “seeing-everything-is-magic”.
8_ Ivan Mosjoukine notes here, so as not to forget: “what I learn from the Circus is that the slightest gesture is important and that anything is possible” - Spring 2011
9_ Despite the decree of 1807 prohibiting them at the circus, words may be uttered if they help reveal the bodies and the actions.
10_ The show must follow the traditional format of 2 ½ hours, with a 20-minute intermission (1h05 per part)
11_ The performers must be sweating 50% of the time.
12_ Snacks must be served during intermission.
13_ Demagogy is prohibited.
14_ The authors shall perform only through the said person
of Ivan Mosjoukine, Circus Director.
15_ All hierarchy shall be rejected. I thus take my vows”.
