A little man is in his house, which seems to have been swallowed by the earth. Suddenly, a strange man appears next to him. They could be a post-flood Robinson and Friday… The universe created by Jambenoix Mollet, actor and circus artist, and Philippe Eustachon, actor and director, shows infinite lightness of hand. With humour and strangeness, they tell a thousand stories of otherness. At Les Subsistances, the company Anomalie & … is also setting off on another adventure, a show called Mister Monster.

Le Grand Nain tells the story of the appearance of the “Savage” in the life of a funny little guy. Mister Monster, their next creation, is planned for 2010. It will deal with the confrontation between the educated and the animal. Is this wild, animal characteristic of the individual a source of inspiration for you?
Philippe Eustachon : The sudden appearance of the “Savage” is also the appearance of the Other, with his transformations, who often appears out of the blue and under various guises. The Other is then merely what lives outside the small world whose borders we are monitoring, Humanity. How can we explore, on stage, a world where we would accept porous borders? Mostly it is the role of the wind, of the stranger that I am interested in. The wild or animal part is just a name that we had to give it. We always struggle to define this place of mystery that we don’t know well but that attracts us. It is associated somehow with instinct and feeling. Everything goes really fast and it feels like there is no other way.
Jambenoix Mollet : There is this inherent Savage, a sort of indefinable personal nature, raw and wild, an intimate guide full of vigour with whom I would like to let go. But there is also the idea that I invent this nature as I know it. The Savage would therefore be one of my inventions too. It’s a paradox, and the nature/nurture dualism goes full circle. Hmmm... Yes, philosophically speaking it is very inspiring.
In the same way, the fantastical is very present in Le Grand Nain, and will be in Mister Monster. What is, in your eyes, the challenge of this shift into imaginary worlds?
PE: What is possible with the fantastical is not with realism. The character of the “tall dwarf” (the “grand nain” of the title) should be impossible: it’s an oxymoron, a contradiction, a tapestry of opposites. This man with his tall chest and small legs invented his own way to move in order to overcome the disaster he just experienced. The story of Mister Monster is based on a Middle-Age legend, which conveys a strong subconscious subtext on today’s society, and where various worlds and eras cohabit. It is the story of two brothers separated at birth in a forest and raised in two different worlds. By rewriting this tale, I want to tell the journey of a man who carries with him the heritage of the civilisation he entered and the strength of the nature in which he grew up.
Background
Since 1995, Anomalie has been inviting a group of circus artists, dancers and actors to join an author, each time different from the last (Joseph Nadj’s Le cri du caméléon, Guy Alloucherie’s Et après, on verra bien..., Martin Zimmermann’s Anatomie-Anomalie). In 2007, as part of Les Solitude(s)-Anomalie, each member of Anomalie created a personal project on the topic of solitude. On this occasion, the meeting between Jambenoix Mollet (Anomalie) and Philippe Eustachon (H.T Les Witotos) has led to the creation of Le Grand Nain at La Ferme du Buisson in March 2007. Their next production (2010), Mister Monster, will be performed at Les Subsistances.
