"LA NATURA DELLE COSE"
VIRGILIO SIENI
Dance
10, 11, 12 DECEMBER 2009 at 8.30pm
Joint production with Maison de la Danse.
The show is showcased in association with the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale.
Inspired by Lucretius’s On the nature of things.
For around twenty years now, Virgilio Sieni has been passionately building in Florence a clever and mysterious oeuvre. Choreography, photography, publishing... His various projects show great aesthetic cohesion and are all imprinted with the same spirituality.
His knowledge of art history and anatomy as well as martial arts means he tirelessly examines subtle notions such as balance, energy and vibration. His fascinating show follows on the footsteps of Lucretius’s philosophy. The topic explored in On the Nature of Things is here, this dialectic between the marvellous and bewilderment, delight and bitterness, sensual pleasure and disintegration. Like an opera made with the body, sound and word, this show for four male and one female dancers wearing disturbing-looking masks, also forms an incredibly rich visual poem. Between the diaphanous curtains framing the stage, or through a dense mist, the visions offered to us take us to a far away place.
