Hebrew is his native tongue, Yiddish the language spoken by his father, Arabic a tongue he always heard spoken, English and French the languages he uses in his work. Although he is originally Israeli, Yuval Pick says he is made of and influenced by all five of these languages. His show is designed to tell the story of this split in his identity as a choreographer but also in the identities of many Israelis. Pick wants to create a mosaic-like show, which shows the richness and the dislocation driven by the multiplication of languages in a complex territory. Dance, sounds, recordings - many materials will feed this game of construction to form a score modelling the bodies.

This production is part of a commission by Les Subsistances on the topic of languages and the way they shape your story and your work as a choreographer. Could you tell us why you accepted it? ?
Yuval Pick : I come from quite a complex country, and I always found it difficult to talk, in my work and through my aesthetics, about this country and my roots in a way that is inspiring and powerful enough for me. This commission appealed to me straight away as I am very attached to sound and musical research, and the idea of working on the various languages spoken in Israel as material inspired me and gave me the boost needed to explore my roots through an artistic creation. Being confronted with English (the language of people who occupied Israel-Palestine before the creation of the Israeli state), Arabic (language of our neighbours and those who live with us side-by-side in Israel), and Yiddish (a language symbolising the life of the Jewish people in the Eastern Europe Diaspora), obviously shapes our way of being and our growing up in Israel, our everyday reality and the way we live and communicate. It also shaped my approach to the body, my physicality, and my relations to others and to space. When I look at my productions, I can see that the concepts of borders, of claiming the right to be on a land, of looking for and proving the right to be there, are incorporated into my body language and the way I have to build my shows… In Israel, the concept of time is very different to the one in Europe: you can feel that there are very strong energies, contradictory ones, a really strong sense of urgency, of survival, which are not yet processed, which have not yet landed to take perspective, and which stay in a suspended state. You can notice that in people, the way they talk, move, and communicate.
I thought it would be interesting to go there to collect sound bites, pieces of languages and of lives, that characterise this peculiar energy; I feel like creating this project as if it was a music sheet, a metaphor of both this richness, this almost paradoxical contradiction of the country, and of this urgency to survive.
Background
Yuval Pick trained at the Bat-Dor Dance School in Tel-Aviv, then entered the Batsheva Dance Company in 1991. He has played several roles in works by William Forsythe, Angelin Preljocaj, Hervé Robbe, Jiri Kylian, Vera Mantero, Carolyn Carlson, Tero Saarinen and Russell Maliphant. Following two seasons at the Lyon Opera Ballet, he founded The Guests and created several shows including Look white inside (2007) and Living in Pieces (2008), and more recently 17 Drops as part of the festival Biennale Musiques en Scène.
