Your work is often at least partly autobiographical. Is being an artist a way for you of transforming your reality?
Cynthia Hopkins : Yes! My work as an artist is not only a way of transforming my reality, it’s also a way of transforming myself. It is a method of calculated evolution through investigation and transformation of those things in myself and the world that disturb me the most.
You are an amazing singer, and your band Gloria Deluxe is well-known in New-York. Why are theatre, video and dance so essential in your world?
The words, video, dance, and performance which are part of my theater shows allow me to tell stories which are multi-faceted, which weave together historical and autobiographical truth with outlandish fiction into a tapestry which transcends reality. Through these works I hope to inspire the audience on multiple levels at once: emotional, visceral, philosophical, intellectual, spiritual. Through music I can express my heart but through theater I can also express my body, mind, and spirit.
Background
In 1999, Cynthia Hopkins founded the band Gloria Deluxe, with which she would produce five albums. The band, who have opened for such legendary artists as David Byrne or Patti Smith, plays a distinctive mix of folk, rock, cabaret, blues, and country music. In the previous chapters of The Accidental Trilogy, a multimedia epic in three acts, Cynthia Hopkins has explored personal stories on amnesia, memories, evolution, and the transformation of identity...
