What happens when you put together one of the most physical American stage director and one of the most youthful and comic French companies? At the request of Les Subsistances, Dan Safer, director/choreographer and Le Collectif Ildi! Eldi, a young French company, will work together on a text by American Charles L. Mee, entitled Heaven on Earth. They will meet as part of a residence to test their very different visions and theatrical cultures on common activities: hoping, falling in love, building sports arenas, sowing seeds, paying bills, helping friends or dreaming about the future. Will it lead to a real culture shock?
Background
Dan Safer, the artistic director of Witness Relocation, comes from the wild neighbourhoods of New Jersey. He has directed, choreographed, and adapted every play by Witness Relocation. He has choreographed operas, rock videos and fashion shows. He is also a teacher at New York University and teaches workshops in the States and elsewhere. Magazine Artforum has called him “pure expressionistic danger”. He used to be a go-go dancer and has choreographed the birthday party for the Queen of Thailand.
Le Collectif ’’ildi! eldi’’ is a research and creative space, founded by a group of friends who wanted to do theatre with humour, simplicity, and a love of words, in collusion with the audience. Following her training at the ENSATT, Sophie Cattani has worked with among others Gilles Chavassieux, Laurent Fréchuret, Michel Raskine, Emmanuel Daumas and Denis Marleau. On the big screen, she has been in movies by Nicole Garcia, Cédric Anger, and Claude Miller. After graduating from the ERAC, Antoine Oppenheim has worked with Jean-Pierre Vincent, Jean-Louis Martinelli, Jan Fabre, and Galin Stoev. He has also played in movies by Alfred Lot and Mathieu Delaporte. François Sabourin honed his skills at the CNR in Poitiers, under Jean-Pierre Berthomier, and has worked with Olivier Maurin, Matthias Langhoff and Delices DADA.
